“What’s wrong? You trying to lose your badge, too? Should I tell the Chief about this?”

Judson was scared out of his wits by Silas. He stammered, “Mr. Myers, please, I had no idea about any of this! As soon as Callie messaged me, I came right over! Even if you hadn’t shown up, I would’ve sorted it out!”

“And as for the whole Jewell family business, I’m on Callie’s side, okay? Right, Callie? Back me up here! This was all Karter’s idea. I honestly had no clue what was going on!”

It was pretty obvious Judson was totally blindsided.

Karter hadn’t expected Judson to be so freaked out by Calliope and Silas. Now he was starting to panic, too.

He shot Judson a desperate look and blurted out, “Judson, I only arrested Calliope because someone reported her for murder and fraud! That’s it!”

“Oh yeah? You got any proof? Or did you just take someone’s hush money and do it for them?”

“Idiot. Do you have any idea who Callie is? Her rank is way above yours. If she’d actually done anything wrong, it wouldn’t be your job to handle it.”

Judson swore under his breath, “You can get the hell out of here. Seriously, enjoy unemployment, because you’re about to lose your job!”

“Judson, I swear, I’m innocent!”

Now Karter was genuinely terrified. He hadn’t realized this could cost him his job. He’d worked so hard to get here. He couldn’t lose it now.

At this point, Karter was starting to put the pieces together. He realized Calliope was no ordinary woman. Messing with her could be the end of him.

He turned to Calliope, pleading, “Ms. Jewell, I’m sorry! I was wrong! I shouldn’t have arrested you without evidence, or threatened you like that!”

“But it wasn’t my idea! It was... it was Lisette! She put me up to it! If anyone wants to hurt you, it’s her, not me!”

“Don’t worry. Nothing like this will ever happen again,” Judson promised. “This was my oversight.”

With that, he gave Karter a swift kick, making Karter yelp in pain.

Afterward, Calliope stepped outside and got into Silas’s car.

“You really didn’t have to come. I already told Judson about it,” Calliope said, glancing over.
