The Jewell family sat tensely in the living room, the air thick with accusation and regret.

Ulysses glanced up at Horatio, his jaw clenched. “Horatio, you know Callie’s the one who helped you walk again. Are you really going to side with Valerian on this? Going along with his plan to drag her name through the mud in front of the whole world?”

He looked around the room, his voice cracking a little. “Aren’t we just stabbing her in the back after everything she’s done for us? Callie’s always been good to us. Why are we treating her like this?”

Horatio shifted uncomfortably, the only one not meeting Ulysses’ glare.

Ulysses pressed on. “Callie might not be blood, but she grew up right beside us! Doesn’t that count for something? All these years, don’t you feel anything?”

“She’s helped you up, not once but twice! The first time, you always thought it was Lisette who did it, but Callie never said a word to correct you. In fact, it was Lisette who kept lying to all of us, wasn’t it? Horatio, doesn’t this make you feel the least bit guilty?”

Lisette, sitting off to the side, looked down at her lap. “I know I was wrong,” she muttered. “I shouldn’t have pretended I was the one who helped Horatio… but I didn’t know what else to do! He just assumed it was me, and I thought if I told the truth you’d all be angry, and no one ever let me explain anyway.”

She bit her lip, putting on an air of helplessness.

Ulysses gave a short, bitter laugh. “So you lied because you were scared we’d be mad? But you were fine living with that lie all these years?”

“And as for all those times she supposedly saved us, she never brought out any proof. How is that our fault?”

“If there were misunderstandings, that’s on us, not Lisette. She never said anything to make us think otherwise. We did that to ourselves!”
