“You really think that just because you’re his so-called sister now, Marlon won’t be on guard? Athena, you’re underestimating him.”

Leaning back against his chest, Athena closed her eyes. “At least now I have a chance.”

Tyler hugged her even tighter, as if he’d never get to hold her again.

He’d promised himself he wouldn’t get angry at her anymore, so why couldn’t he control his temper?

He pressed his forehead to her back and, after a long silence, let out a heavy sigh.

“I’m angry, but I don’t want to see you die. I’ll help you.”

Something inside Athena softened—a first for her, when it came to Tyler.

He turned her around, and now they were facing each other.

“Athena, the reason I didn’t tell you the truth is because Marlon is almost impossible to take down. I wasn’t trying to mislead you. He’s got dirty dealings in his shipping business, and the authorities have started cracking down on those kinds of crimes. My plan was to find something on him, get the government’s attention, and let them deal with him. He’d be looking at at least ten years behind bars. I just didn’t want you exposed. I was afraid Marlon would target you, or that you’d do something reckless if you lost control. All I ever wanted was for you to be safe.”

But it was too late for any of that now. Athena had no trust left for him.

Tyler held her close, tears streaming down his face for the first time in years.
