Tyler had left early that morning, off on some errand no one seemed to know about.

“I’m here for you, sis. Are you really not coming back to the Keller family? Grandma was so upset this morning she nearly fainted.”

Marlon had never been much for propriety—calling her “sis” without a hint of embarrassment, no matter the situation.

Athena, on the other hand, looked a little uncomfortable. A crease appeared between her brows. “Don’t call me that.”

Marlon slid onto the bench beside her, his eyes drifting over to the garden, where the flowers were in full bloom. Somehow, he thought Athena fit perfectly among them.

His gaze never left her as he stood and moved closer, a sly smile curling his lips.

“Are you staying away from the Olson family because of Maggie? I’ve already made it clear to everyone—Maggie and I have nothing to do with each other anymore. That chapter is closed.”

“It’s partly because of her,” Athena replied, her voice cool, “but there are other reasons too.”

“Like what? Are you worried the rest of the Keller family won’t accept you? Don’t worry, I’ll deal with them for you.”
