It felt as if a bolt of lightning had struck Maggie square in the head.
Her foot slammed down on the gas pedal in shock, the car lurching to a stop right in the middle of traffic. Horns blared, and a couple of traffic cops were already heading her way, but Maggie barely registered any of it.
“Are you sure this news is real?” she demanded into the phone, desperation creeping into her voice.
“It’s true. The Keller family has already made an announcement. Maybe Marlon blocked you, so you didn’t see his Facebook post?”
That last sentence hit Maggie like a slap. Of course Marlon had blocked her.
She took a shaky breath and hung up without another word, immediately dialing Grandma Edith.
No answer.
Maggie’s heart sank. If Edith wasn’t picking up, the news was probably true.
No wonder Grandma Edith had always favored Athena. She’d even gone so far as to call off the wedding because of her.
So this was it.
This was what it all came down to.
Maggie felt like fate was playing the cruelest joke on her. Did Grandma Edith recognize Athena at the ceremony? Is that why she stopped everything?
Damn it!
She cursed over and over again in her mind, but it was too late. There was no fixing things now.
She and Marlon were truly finished. The thought of all the things she’d said to Athena at the church made her stomach twist—Athena must despise her now.
And if Athena decided to get back at her?
She couldn’t just sit around and wait for it to happen. She had to act first.
Kerwin.
A sly smile crept onto Maggie’s lips, and then she even laughed out loud.
