Juan smiled, but his eyes were filled with disappointment.

It made Debra feel bad, like she'd hurt him.

"I just got weirded out by the snooping," she stammered. "I didn't mean to come at you. You seem like a good guy."

"No need to butter me up," Juan said with a faint smile. "This engagement isn't a big deal. But calling it off has to wait until you graduate from college."

"Why?" she asked.

"No reason," he said, setting the takeout aside. "It's cold. Let's eat out."

He stood up, signaling the secretary to clear the table.

Debra followed, then remembered her homework in the meeting room and turned to grab it.

Juan saw it through. "Leave it. My secretary will get it."

She hummed in acknowledgment, falling in step beside him.

The elevator felt cramped even with just the two of them. She snuck a glance at him. His sharp features screamed a TV-drama CEO.

In the underground garage, the driver was ready. Debra followed Juan into the car, clueless about where they were eating.

The car stopped at a low-key French restaurant downtown.

She stared at the sign, then realized Juan had already gone inside.

"Sure, sir." The waiter nodded, taking the menus.

As Debra marveled at the fancy glasses, Juan said, "Just relax and be yourself."

"What do you mean?"

"You can read that menu, right?"

She sipped her drink without responding. Instead of pressing it, he tossed a pack of cigarettes onto the table.

"Go on. Let's see how you do it," he said.

She looked down at the pack. "You want me to smoke? You know it's bad for your health, right?"
