It was Sunday evening.
For tonight’s live stream, both couples were returning to the secluded mountain retreat where it all began.
To stir up some buzz, the producers had deliberately arranged for the four of us to squeeze into the same car for the ride back.
The live Instagram comments were still primarily focused on Jax and Vivienne, with messages like “made for each other” and “perfect match” flooding the screen.
But the tide was subtly shifting.
@NotBlindAnymore: "If you weren't as blind as her husband, Jax, you'd join us and choose Daisy and Caspian."
@TeamCaspian: "She's all up in his face, and her husband is just over there counting his cash."
@JustSaying: "It's just a coincidence, right? Caspian and her barely knew each other before this."
The conversation surrounding Caspian and me was steadily growing, and some fans, who loved a good underdog story, had created a new hashtag, #DaisyCaspian, specifically for discussing the “possibility” of Caspian and me.
So, right before we got into the car, the producer slipped me a task card.
"Open this when you're in the car, it's only for you," he whispered, with a sly grin.
Jax was driving, and the car was fitted with multiple cameras.
Vivienne, with an innocent look on her face, beat me to the front passenger seat, twisting her head back specifically to gauge my reaction.
"Oops,” she said, playing the naive card. “This didn't have your name on it. You're not going to be all dramatic about this, are you?”
Jax was clearly enjoying her attempt to provoke me. He was waiting for me to lose my cool so he could step in as a "peacemaker" and throw me a bone.
But I completely ignored her taunt and calmly got into the back seat.
As we sat at a red light, the two in the front simultaneously glanced into the rearview mirror, their eyes meeting ours.
Jax was watching me, wanting to see if I was truly unaffected.
Vivienne was watching Caspian, wanting to see his reaction to Daisy.
Caspian and I, however, sat as far from each other as we could in the backseat, as if we were strangers.
"Daisy, sweetie,” Vivienne suddenly spread her fingers to show off her ring.
Jax had given it to her the previous night. It was the same style as the wedding ring he had given me.
“Don’t misunderstand,” she said, playing to the cameras. “This ring represents the couple in our story. I'm only showing you in case you were going to jump to conclusions.”
“But I guess you wouldn't understand our love for our characters. After all, out of the four of us, you're the only one who's not have your own business, with no career ambitions.”
She kept talking, trying to get a rise out of me, or at least a flicker of jealousy or resentment. Her words were for me, and for Caspian, wanting him to see that I was just a discarded woman, not worthy of his attention.
Unfortunately for her, Caspian seemed to have the ability to fall asleep the instant he got into a car. Vivienne’s show was clearly just for herself.
Meanwhile, I stared down at the task card, my mind blank.
It read: 【Hold Caspian's hand without the other couple noticing.】
The highway was mostly empty. On either side, stretches of tropical vegetation were bathed in the winter sun, creating a seemingly endless sea of green.
I turned away, quickly withdrawing my hand.
But in that instant, a dry, warm hand reached out and held mine.
A warm, clean touch.
Instinctively, I tried to pull away, but he gripped my hand tighter.
Fingers intertwined.
The car radio played an old country song, its melody upbeat, but its lyrics filled with a tinge of mockery, telling the story of a woman packing her bags, quietly leaving her sleeping husband to face an empty home.
The chorus kept repeating:
“He’ll wake up and I’ll be gone, gone, gone. He’ll wake up and I’ll be gone.”
As the song finished, with only five seconds left, Jax, who was probably annoyed at my refusal to acknowledge Vivienne's words, glanced at me in the rearview mirror. "Some people, they deserve to be betrayed," he said.
He was so obsessed with my reaction that he didn't see the two tightly interlocked hands in the back seat.
I’d forgotten.
Caspian was a possessive maniac.
Hand-holding wasn't for the darkness.
If it was going to be done, it had to be done in the daylight.
