Mrs. Brennan frowned. She suddenly recalled Juliet’s many hints about Lauren’s behavior and the shocking revelation that Lauren had been meddling in Anastasia’s company. In a flash, everything clicked into place. She kept her thoughts to herself, however, and simply held Anastasia's hand, speaking to her with renewed affection.

After an hour, Mrs. Brennan prepared to leave.

"You're not staying a little longer, Grandma?" Anastasia asked, reluctant to let her go.

"I'll be back soon, dear," she said, gently stroking Anastasia's hair. "But I must go now. It's cold outside, so don't see me out. I don't want you catching a cold."

Despite her words, Anastasia walked them to the car, helping her grandmother in. The sight of her filial granddaughter filled Mrs. Brennan's heart with warmth.

"Harrison is a fine young man," she said, holding Anastasia's hand. "I can see he treats you well. Your mother chose a good husband for you. I feel much better knowing he's here to protect you. But if he ever mistreats you, don't you dare suffer in silence. You come and tell your grandmother, and I will set him straight!"

Harrison had left for his own grandmother's estate shortly after returning home, so Mrs. Brennan hadn't seen him. But the respectful way the staff treated Anastasia told her everything she needed to know about her standing in Rosewood Manor.
