"I had a dream about Niki... It was barking at me, and just as I was about to hug it, it vanished." Izabella's voice broke as she sobbed, her pregnant body already hypersensitive. The mere thought of Niki set her off into a hiccupping frenzy, tears streaming down her face as she sat curled up on the bed, making muffled noises through her stuffed nose.

Her belly heaved with each hiccup, a dull pain accompanying it. Casey, worried that she might harm herself with all the crying, handed her a glass of warm water to sip.

Izabella drank and hiccupped simultaneously, unable to stop. Casey watched her with a heart full of compassion, holding her close and gently patting her back, silently comforting her.

Niki's death was something neither Izabella nor he could easily forget, and he found himself at a loss on how to console her. Perhaps letting it all out was for the best.

Nestled in Casey's arms, Izabella continued to shed tears, her voice choked with emotion. "I always feel like Niki is still with me, but I can't see her," she gasped.

It was like the years she had spent as a ghost, drifting, able to witness the joys and sorrows of the living, yet unseen by them. Could it be that Niki remained by her side even in death, watching over her?

Looking down at her swollen belly, Izabella whispered, "If everything in this world really can be reborn, I hope Niki becomes my child."

As if in response, her stomach gently stirred, a subtle movement that seemed like a mirage, yet Izabella felt it.

The dog days of August were the most stifling, and during one of those sweltering days, Casey accompanied Izabella to her prenatal checkup, with Bunny, Casey's mother, tagging along, ostensibly out of concern that her son might not be up to the task of caring for his pregnant wife.

Izabella, dressed in a simple white sundress, still felt overheated, and every few steps made her breathless.

The checkup went well, with a due date set for mid-November. Carrying twins was riskier than a single child, and a cesarean section might be necessary. They discussed the option of admitting Izabella to the hospital early to prepare.

Izabella had an aversion to hospitals and decided if she had to check in, she'd do so in November.

Needing the restroom, Izabella made her way there with Bunny's assistance, as Casey stayed behind. Bunny watched Izabella like a hawk, yet despite her vigilance, disaster struck.

Emerging from the restroom, Izabella was blindsided by a little boy who crashed into her. She fell backwards, landing on her stomach with a thud, instantly breaking into a cold sweat from the pain and turning deathly pale, on the verge of fainting.

Bunny, right behind her, failed to catch her and was knocked off balance herself, jarring her spine.
