Lemira let out a bitter laugh. "Why not just call Lucian and confront him directly?"

She dialed Lucian's number, but there was no answer. Still, she was almost certain Alaric was onto something.

Alaric, brimming with righteous anger, glared at Asher. "Asher, did I say anything wrong?"

Asher, feeling a pang of guilt, stammered, "You misunderstood. I was just telling Lucian that I regretted missing Lemira's call, which led to Evander losing his leg."

Lemira shot back, "And if you'd answered the call?"

Asher hesitated. "Well, then it would have been a serious decision to make."

"And what if not amputating meant he would die?"

Asher was at a loss for words. The only answer was the obvious one: amputation to save a life. But he couldn't bring himself to say it out loud.

Finally, Asher protested, "Who could have known what would happen back then?"

"Exactly, who could have known? Yet everyone blames me. Is that fair?"

Lemira raised her voice, "I'm making it clear today. I will make sure the foundation holds Evelina accountable. Let's see if she's as invincible as she thinks!"

With that, Lemira stormed upstairs, leaving the room in an awkward silence.

Alaric sneered at Asher, "You've really let us down, Asher. I'm going to contact Lucian and make sure he clears up the truth about what happened back then. Lemira shouldn't take the fall."

"How dare you speak to me like that?" Asher was both nervous and defensive, realizing that everyone seemed to be siding with Lemira against him. Did the truth even matter after all these years?

Once Alaric left, only three people remained in the room.

Evander approached Asher. "Asher, I’ve finally managed to be with the person I love. Do you really want to see Eve caught up in a lawsuit?"

Asher glanced at Evelina. "Has she truly agreed to be with you and marry you?"

Asher felt guilty about Evander's disability. Over the years, he'd done everything to make up for it. But he never expected Evander to fall for Evelina.
