Within the radiance, Aldric's phantom began to solidify. The body that had been little more than a shadow slowly turned clear.
His white hair darkened. The wrinkles vanished. His bent frame straightened.
A middle-aged man gradually emerged in the light, hard-featured and stern, with the Frost Deity Branch's distinctive cold nobility stamped between his brows.
It was the first time Jared had seen Aldric this clearly.
"Senior, you've finally restored your body?" Jared stepped forward and saluted with clasped fists.
Aldric lifted his head and looked at Jared in silence for a long time.
Then he shook his head. "Not yet. Even here on the altar, even with the Heart of the Abyss, how could I possibly restore my body that quickly?"
"Then how long will it take for you to restore it, Senior?" Jared asked.
Aldric fell quiet for a moment before answering. "I don't know either. Perhaps a hundred years. Or a thousand. Ten thousand..."
At Aldric's words, Gwendolyn froze.
She had assumed that if the Frost Deity Branch's Ancestor could truly return to life in a restored body, their line would rise again.
But now she was hearing that restoring that body would take this long?
A thousand years from now? Ten thousand? Would anyone from the Frost Deity Branch even still be left?
Aldric seemed to read the worry on Gwendolyn's face. He smiled faintly.
"Child, you are the heir of the Frost Deity Branch. Even if I never restore my body, the Frost Deity Branch will not die out."
"Take the Heart of the Abyss. When you reach the Twentieth Firmament, find the high sanctuary of our Frost Deity Branch and receive the complete inheritances. When that happens, the Frost Deity Branch will rise again."
The Heart of the Abyss slowly drifted toward Gwendolyn.
She reached out and closed her hand around it.
It ran warm in her palm.
Icy blue radiance climbed her arm in thin streams, spreading upward until it merged with the Frost God's power inside her.
When he saw that, Aldric slowly sat down on the altar.
"You should go now. I'm going into seclusion to restore my body.
Once you're outside, seal the hidden passage. Don't let anyone come in and disturb me."
Jared nodded and turned toward Gwendolyn and Josephine.
Josephine had already come out of her healing trance. She was leaning against the ice wall, her dark-crimson eyes fixed on Jared, something unreadable moving in them.
She had seen everything.
And heard everything too.
The Ancestor of the Frost Deity Branch. The Heart of the Abyss. Reforging a body...
All of it was completely new to her.
"Let's go," Jared said when he reached her, holding out his hand.
Josephine looked at his hand and hesitated.
Then she gave in and let him pull her to her feet.
Her hand was cold.
His was warm.
Violet chaotic force poured from his palm, wrapped around her hand, and seeped into her body thread by thread, steadying her injuries.
Josephine shivered slightly, surprise flashing through her dark-crimson eyes.
"Your chaotic force... it can heal?"
"Yes."
Jared let go of her hand.
"Chaotic force is the source of all elements, including the power of life. It's not as effective for healing as spiritual power made specifically for that, but it works."
Josephine fell silent for a moment, then nodded.
The three of them left the crystal palace, passed through the passage, and returned to the floor of the chasm.
Jared looked up once at the exit above the chasm.
Then he turned away, took several massive dark stones from his Storage Ring, melted them with chaotic force into molten fire, and poured it into the chasm.
The molten fire hit the cold and hardened at once, sealing the chasm completely shut.
After that, he laid down several wards over the sealed rift and reinforced them with chaotic force, making sure no one could get in from there.
"That should do it." Jared brushed the dust from his hands, then looked at Gwendolyn and Josephine. "Let's go."
The three of them climbed the ice wall along the edge of the chasm and made their way back onto the ice plains.
High in the sky, the three blazing suns hung overhead, their golden, silver-white, and crimson light weaving together and washing the entire ice plains in brilliant tricolor.
The ice plains were dead silent.
Only the mourning cry of the freezing wind and the faint crack of splintering ice broke the stillness.
The corpses of the Hall of Radiance cultivators still lay scattered across the ice plains. Their golden blood had already congealed into a dark-golden crust that glimmered with an eerie sheen under the suns.
