Jared's group continued southeast.

The low hills slowly opened into plains. Shrubs and wild grass spread across the land, and a few crooked old trees stood alone in the distance, their crowns crowded with black crows crying in hoarse voices.

At the far end of the horizon, a dark-red mountain range lay beneath the sunset.

Master Veridian walked beside Jared, still savoring his grand entrance.

"Mr. Chance, about that move earlier, the one where I dropped from the sky. If I had shouted a line at the same time, wouldn't it have been perfect?"

Jared glanced at him.

"What line?"

Master Veridian thought for a moment, then puffed out his chest and planted his hands on his hips.

"What petty villain dares touch my people? How about that? Dominant, right?"

"Dominant, yes," Jared said. "A little dated."

"Dated? How is that dated?"

Master Veridian grew anxious. "I spent a long time thinking of that. If you say it is dated, then give me a better one."

Jared thought briefly.

"Try this. 'Hey, black bastard, take my palm.'"

Master Veridian froze.

Then his eyes lit up.

"Hey, black bastard, take my palm. Good. Very good. Direct. Powerful. Grounded. I will use that next time."

The young acolyte rolled his eyes behind them.

"Master, you are a bodyguard, not a stage actor."

"What do you know?"

Master Veridian turned and glared at him. "This is presence. If a bodyguard enters without presence, how is he supposed to control the scene? How is he supposed to be worth ten million crystals?"

The young acolyte curled his lip and stopped arguing.

Gwendolyn walked beside Jared with a smile at the corner of her mouth.

Ever since Master Veridian joined them, the journey had become much livelier.

The old man loved to brag and show off, but he truly had strength. He was also cheerful enough to talk nonsense with anyone.

"Jared," Gwendolyn asked softly, "will the Golden Crow clan send more people?"

Jared shook his head.

"Not right away. Blackraven was Golden Immortal Level Eight and one of their top assassins. Now that he is dead, they cannot easily send anyone stronger. And they still do not know exactly how much strength we have. They will be cautious."

"So we should be safe until we reach the Southern Wasteland Demon Marches?"

"Not necessarily."

Jared's tone stayed calm. "Corvin Skyreach will not let this go. He may not send another assassin immediately, but he will think of another method. He only needs time."

Gwendolyn nodded and said nothing more.

Master Veridian leaned in.

"What is there to fear? With me here, one comes, I kill one. Two come, I kill the pair. If the whole Golden Crow clan pours out, I will take the entire nest in one pot."

Jared smiled.

"Then I will trouble you, Senior."

"Easy."

Master Veridian waved with heroic confidence.

The group kept moving.

The sun sank lower, turning the horizon gold and red.

...

While Jared and his companions traveled at an easy pace, the Golden Crow clan's territory, tens of thousands of miles away, had sunk into gloom.

Inside the council hall, Corvin Skyreach sat in the main seat.

His face was dark enough to drip water.

A shattered jade token lay before him.

Blackraven's life-soul token.
