Would Fairfax really hit a woman? If he did, he deserved to die alone. That would make him even worse than a man who just used women for his own gain.

"Why wouldn't he?" Amos countered. "You know how bad his temper is."

"But... he shouldn't put his hands on a woman." Yvonne chewed her lip. "Has he ever hit her before?"

Now that Amos mentioned it, she was genuinely concerned.

"I have no idea," Amos admitted. Whenever he hung out with Fairfax, the man never had women around. But the rumors out of Marina City had made it clear their marriage was a disaster. It was confusing—he treated her horribly back then, yet now he was acting like he couldn't live without her.

"Then why are you spreading rumors?" Yvonne rolled her eyes. Spreading baseless gossip was how things got twisted out of proportion.

"Hey, why are you glaring at me?" Amos threw his hands up in frustration.

"I just think you shouldn't run your mouth. It causes trouble." She knew how reckless Amos could be with his words. If he hadn't been so annoying, Yardley probably would have forgotten about them by now. Instead, Amos ran his mouth so much that Yardley made a point to make his life hell just out of spite.

Downstairs in the dining room, Fairfax sat motionless, his face dark with suppressed emotion. After slapping him, Starla had simply walked away.

After a long time, Fairfax dialed Amos's number. Upstairs, not knowing if it was safe to venture out yet, Amos answered on the first ring.

"Sir?"
