"Do you think Starla is actually still alive?" Amos asked thoughtfully.

To be fair, he had been at the Shark Sea that day. He had seen the wreckage with his own eyes and had been entirely convinced she was dead. But after days of listening to Fairfax's drunken, obsessive rants about her survival, even Amos's steadfast certainty was beginning to waver.

"Alive or dead, it has absolutely nothing to do with him anymore," Yvonne retorted.

Amos blinked. "Hey, don't snap at me. I'm not the bastard who hurt her."

She rolled her eyes. "Look, just stop discussing her with him. She's gone. Let her rest in peace."

Honestly, Yvonne had her own suspicions that Starla might have survived. They had made a pact before everything went down, but Starla had supposedly died before they could see it through. If she was still out there, Yvonne only wished her the best.

But that was exactly why Fairfax could never find out. His idea of a happy ending definitely didn't include letting her go. If he believed she was alive, he would tear the world apart looking for her, forcing her into a lifetime of hiding.

"You're right," Amos agreed. "You have to make him believe she's gone."

"Wait, isn't she already dead? I mean..."

"He doesn't believe it! You need to make sure he does."

Only if Fairfax truly accepted her death would he finally stop his relentless hunt. That was the only way Starla—wherever she was—could ever find true peace.
