Susanna gasped. Hearing the sheer malice in his voice sent a violent tremor through her body. He was entirely unhinged. To think she had tried to threaten a madman—she must have lost her mind as well.

Once Yardley was gone and she was alone in the room, she pulled out her phone with trembling hands and dialed Fairfax's number.

He picked up quickly. "Speak."

"Fairfax..." she sobbed, her voice breaking with grief. "I'm useless. I can't avenge them. Yardley isn't like you."

But wasn't he? They were exactly the same—both fiercely protective of their true families. Regardless of the friction between Yardley and Starla, he was undeniably on her side. He clearly regretted compromising her safety for his own goals in the past.

"She deserves to die, Fairfax!" Susanna cried, the thought of Starla walking free twisting her gut into painful knots. She wanted Starla dead.

"She's not the one who deserves to die," Fairfax replied.
