“Sign the divorce papers,” Starla said, her voice unyielding. “And not only will your grandmother’s problems be solved, but so will everyone else’s in the Yelchin family.”

Her position hadn’t changed. She wasn’t backing down.

At the mention of the divorce papers, Fairfax’s face darkened instantly.

“Kael is coming to Marina City soon,” he tried, one last time. “Are you sure you want our marriage to still be intact when he arrives?”

“That’s not your concern,” Starla replied, completely unfazed. Did he really think those threats still worked on her? The fact that she was willing to cause such a massive upheaval meant that nothing could intimidate her anymore.

Fairfax’s jaw tightened, his breathing growing heavier.

“Will you sign?” Starla pressed.

With the entire Yelchin family pushed to the brink and Harley and Annika relentlessly calling him, even distant relatives were hounding him for a solution. Starla had well and truly turned their world upside down to achieve her goal.

Fairfax closed his eyes for a moment. “Do you have to be so ruthless?”

“You’ve never once asked why I’m being so ruthless,” Starla shot back. “Do you still think I’m just throwing a tantrum over things that happened in the past?”

If that was what he thought, his mind was clearly too muddled to see the truth. But then again, she had been dropping hints for a while now.

The words hit him hard, his throat tightening.

“It seems you still haven’t asked your mother just how many people she’s killed,” Starla said, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “It seems you have a lot of faith in that arrogant, domineering mother of yours.”

Now, she stood shivering in the cold wind, a bitter sense of karma settling over her. All the cruelty she had inflicted on Starla was now coming back to haunt her.

On the other end of the line, Annika, already furious that Fairfax was ignoring her, was incensed by Darleen’s response. “You can’t handle her? Weren’t you so capable before? Weren’t you so good at putting her in her place?”

“The past is the past. This is now. Is that clear enough?” Darleen retorted. She used to be ashamed to admit she couldn’t manage her daughter-in-law, but now, what choice did she have but to accept it?

“By the way,” Darleen added, a touch of malice in her voice. “She kicked you out of your room. It’s her study now.”

“What?” Annika shrieked. “What are you all doing over there? Are you just going to let her run wild like this?”

Her voice was shrill, and it sounded as though her lungs might burst from sheer rage.
