Before either of them could say another word, Darian's mother, Rowena, stormed into the room. She must have caught wind of the incident.

The elegant, affluent woman marched straight up to her son and slapped him hard across the face. "You stupid boy! What kind of vicious wildcat did you bring into our lives? Look at what she did to Yulisa!"

"Mom, you—"

"Don't call me Mom! If you don't break up with that woman immediately, you are no longer my son," Rowena spat, absolutely livid.

She had already despised Tanya, and now? The woman had actually pulled a knife and slashed someone's face!

"How could you possibly be attracted to someone so unhinged? Do you enjoy being tortured?"

The more Rowena spoke, the more her fury escalated. She looked at the cut on Yulisa's luminous skin, her heart aching for the girl. "How am I supposed to explain this to your parents?"

Rowena had been the one to send her there.

She had intended for Yulisa's presence to put Tanya in her place, to show her she didn't belong. She hadn't expected this kind of violent retaliation.

"Please don't blame Ms. Mercer, Mrs. Lynn. I accidentally tripped and fell into the knife she was holding."

Yulisa wasn't technically lying.

But neither Rowena nor Darian believed her for a second.

They both assumed she was just being sweet and covering for Tanya!

Rowena was apoplectic. "Why was she holding a knife in the first place?"

"Well..." Yulisa hesitated.

She looked perfectly conflicted, as if she couldn't find a reasonable excuse to defend Tanya's actions. She cast a helpless, pleading look at Darian.

Darian's irritation spiked.

"Look at this!" Rowena demanded. "Fairfax marrying Starla was a bloody cautionary tale for all of us! Look at what happened to the Yelchin family!"

"Even after seeing that, you still want to marry this woman?"
