Starla spent the entire day training with Reba.

It wasn't until evening that Garret brought her back to the estate. She was drenched in sweat, having pushed herself harder than ever before.

As she stepped out of the car, she casually tossed a handgun to Garret.

"You didn't leave this at the range?" he asked, catching it smoothly.

"Forgot," she replied flatly.

Garret quickly secured the weapon. She had fallen asleep in the car on the way back, utterly exhausted, so they hadn't had a chance to talk.

While she showered, Garret waited downstairs. Half an hour later, she descended, her long hair still damp. The housekeeper had already prepared a hot meal.

Seeing Garret lingering, she frowned. "Something else?"

He nodded.

Given his grim expression, she knew it wasn't good news. She sat down at the dining table.

"Is this about Brinley?"

"Yes. She has uremia."

Starla had just picked up her silverware. Her grip tightened. She looked up at him in surprise. "Well, that was sudden."

And wasn't that fantastic news? Why did Garret look so serious?

"Very sudden," Garret agreed. In their minds, someone as vile as Brinley wasn't meant to meet a peaceful end.

Starla let out a dark laugh. "Wow. And she actually thought the universe was on her side."

Just yesterday, Brinley had called to gloat, claiming some divine intervention was protecting her. That Starla's little victories meant nothing because heaven itself favored Brinley.

She had been so incredibly arrogant.

"When did this happen?"

"Today."

"You see, this is why you should never get too cocky."
