As soon as Herbert left, Garret hurried inside, having crossed paths with him at the door.
"Boss."
Seeing the freezing aura radiating from Herbert, Garret knew they must have had another massive fight over Brinley. Who could have imagined that Herbert Farley would actually go to war with Starla over that woman? Back in Marina City, Herbert had stood firmly by Starla's side. No one could have predicted such a drastic 180 in his attitude.
Starla's face remained utterly blank. She hid her emotions flawlessly. Right now, there wasn't even a trace of sorrow on her features.
"How is Brinley?"
"It really is end-stage kidney failure! We've already handed her over to them."
Them.
Exactly where Brinley belonged.
So what if she had kidney failure? She had committed terrible crimes, and it was time she paid the price for them.
Before, Fairfax had always stood in the way. Now, it was Herbert. But it didn't matter who tried to stop her—no one was going to prevent Starla from making Brinley face justice.
"Keep it strictly under wraps. Herbert isn't going to let this go."
"Understood," Garret nodded.
Herbert's men were currently turning the city upside down looking for Brinley. Unfortunately for him, he didn't know Starla as well as he thought he did, and he had no idea where she had stashed her prisoner.
"Why not just kill her directly?" Garret asked. He didn't quite understand. A bullet would have solved the problem permanently. Why go through such a drawn-out, exhausting process to make her pay?
"I'm retaliating against her because she's a criminal," Starla replied evenly. "If I just murdered her in cold blood, wouldn't that make me a criminal too?"
Garret paused, instantly realizing what she meant.
She refused to become the very monster she despised. She loathed Brinley, and she loathed the entire Yelchin family. Even though Darleen had murdered her mother, Starla hadn't taken Darleen's life with her own hands either...
