Amos chuckled. "What? In a hurry to go find your wife?"

Fairfax shot him an icy glare.

"You don't have to act so touchy," Amos shrugged. "I mean, Starla is a gorgeous, brilliant woman. I still don't get why you kept defending Brinley over her back then."

"Look what it got you—you offended her so deeply that the only reason she's helping me now is because she thinks you're dead! If she finds out you're alive and played her, she'll probably turn her guns on us."

Just thinking about the sheer, lethal hatred Starla had for Fairfax gave Amos a headache.

Right now, Starla thought Fairfax was dead. She believed Amos was helping her in Fairfax's stead, which was why she was stepping up as a strategist—she didn't want Amos to get crushed by Yardley and Herbert's retaliation.

But if she found out Fairfax was still breathing... knowing her temper, all hell would break loose.

"I never intended to deceive her," Fairfax said quietly.

"But you are!"

Fairfax fell silent. Was it deception? He needed everyone to believe he was dead so he could catch that old bastard Licht completely off guard.

If Licht knew he was alive, the general would reinforce his defenses. Fairfax needed him arrogant, assuming his enemy was already in the grave.

Amos shook his head. "Well, you handle it. Your wife is incredibly tough to win over."

Thanks to Romy and Seymour, who were sending updates from Sylvan Vale, Amos knew Starla wasn't entirely cold-blooded. She hadn't been completely indifferent to the news of Fairfax's "death."

Fairfax murmured, "She is hard to win over."
