"But Brinley was different for Fairfax," Herbert pointed out.

"Only because of his brother, Faraday, and the fact that she was carrying the Yelchin child!" Yardley argued. "If the baby belonged to the family, she was a priority. No matter how repulsive she was, or how cruel she was to Starla, Fairfax wouldn't have killed her then."

But later? When the baby was out of the picture? That changed everything.

"Then why didn't he do it back in Marina City?" Herbert pressed.

"Because in Marina City, no one was stopping Starla!" Yardley cut him off sharply.

Herbert had been wondering why Fairfax hadn't just killed Brinley to save everyone the trouble. But back then, Starla had Brinley completely pinned under her heel. Fairfax hadn't needed to intervene.

This time, however, was different.

Herbert's chest tightened as a heavy realization set in.

Yardley watched him. "What? Did you confront Starla about this?"

"I didn't confront her."

"You just didn't believe her?"
