"But Jesse said she isn't the real mastermind; she's just a pawn someone used. Whoever is actually pulling the strings is seriously bad news. Why would they target you? Who could you have possibly pissed off?"

The second Jesse dropped the intel, Laura had practically crawled out of her skin with anxiety and immediately dialed her best friend.

"I was in the shower. Barbara is fine. I'm not at the hospital anymore; I came home after dinner. And I already know about all of it. I just got back from talking to Ethan, and he filled me in."

Ethan had made it abundantly clear that they were the ones strapped to the same sinking ship.

"Do you think it could be Natalie's friend? You know, the one obsessed with Harold? When people lose their minds, they're capable of anything."

"It's not her. Her family was already given a massive warning. She wouldn't dare come after me again, let alone touch Barbara. If she got caught, she wouldn't just face prison time—the Carter family would annihilate her entire bloodline. She could kiss any dream of marrying into their world goodbye."
