All Towns and smarter villages would always have a bit of coats, firewood, and the like in their warehouses. It was just that they generally would only be enough for a portion of the population (usually just for the purchase of the upper class), not to mention a lot of resources had expiration dates.
Some towns were smarter than others and managed to stockpile more, while some were luckier. Dune Town was both of these.
They had always survived in disasters with more survivors than other neighbouring desert territories, even before. Now, with Alterra’s products and support, even more so.
Because Dune Town had grown in resources during its months of partnership with Alterra, they had managed to prepare a lot more resources, which should last for weeks even if they took in some outsiders.
Another fortunate thing was that they also had their greenhouses, except glass was far too expensive and difficult to transport, so they used beast skin lining instead, just opening some flaps to allow the sun in as needed.
The ceiling heights were quite low, though, because their structures could not handle thin supports to such heavy fabric, and their farmers had to kneel to tend to the plants.
Another of their crops were drought-resistant crops from Alterra and had high survival rates. Interestingly, they were also freeze-resistant.
According to the letters, generally speaking, being drought-resistant did not automatically mean they could tolerate the cold. The letter was quite detailed, though Medussa was the only one to understand and could explain it to them.
That said, they detailed it so that they would have knowledge of these things and adapt accordingly, should there be some other emergencies they had to face. It was very kind and considerate.
To summarise: Drought-resistant crops had deep root systems, could store water in their tissues, and had waxy, small leaves to reduce evaporation.
Cold-tolerant plants, on the other hand, had antifreeze-like proteins in their cells, had the ability to prevent crystal formation, and had dormancy mechanisms.
And Alterra indicated which plants they sent—not all of them—could actually have both.
For example, they had one that resembled something they called barley. It could grow in cool climates (provided it was in the greenhouse since the temperature outside could kill anything) and could tolerate moderate frost.
For the drought resistance quality, it had relatively short growing seasons too (which was extremely useful) and had efficient water use.
This was a plant found abundantly near Limestone Valley and had since been planted and improved/modified to be able to grow better, be more productive, and be more resilient.
An interesting thing they found about level 2 farms, which had the function to improve plant survivability, seemed to pass on these traits to the seeds. They realized that it would work for another generation or two of the plant, even if the territory it would be planted on was different from the mother plant’s!
It was even better if the area to be planted on were also Level 2 Farms, as it could maintain its functions.
