Isabel asked, “His father didn't answer the phone?”

“No, he didn’t. You should probably come over as soon as you can,” Miss Turner urged.

Isabel didn't commit, simply humming in acknowledgment before ending the call.

She immediately unblocked Adrian's number and dialed it.

When Adrian saw her name on the screen, a flicker of contempt crossed his eyes. He didn't answer.

Instead, he flipped his phone face down, switched it to silent, and gestured for the meeting to continue.

With no other choice, Isabel had to go to the kindergarten.

She went into her bedroom, changed her clothes, and hailed a cab.

After signing in at the front desk, she made her way to the teacher's office.

“Mrs. Blackwell!”

Isabel gave a polite nod and stepped forward to check on Oliver.

He didn't have a fever. She asked, “What did he eat?”

Miss Turner was a bit confused. Although his father had dropped him off, she assumed the family had eaten breakfast together.

She didn't press the issue, though. “He started throwing up right after he got here this morning, complaining of a stomachache. He must have eaten something at home.”

She phrased it delicately.

Isabel knew she was trying to absolve the school of any responsibility.

“Thank you for your trouble,” Isabel said, gesturing to her right hand. “Could you carry him out for me? I called for an ambulance; it should be at the gate by now.”

Miss Turner noticed the bandage wrapped around her right hand and immediately picked Oliver up to carry him downstairs.

The ambulance had just arrived, and a paramedic took Oliver from her.

“Thank you,” Isabel said to Miss Turner before getting into the ambulance.

“Mommy...”

Oliver reached for her, trying to snuggle into her arms.

Isabel shifted to the side, trying to keep him from bumping her injured right hand.

But a five-year-old is surprisingly strong.

He was thrashing about, and she couldn't control him with just one hand.

The doctor was stunned. “The child needs a guardian...”

“Yes, I know,” Isabel said as she stepped out of the ambulance. “Take him to Dominion Military Hospital. His guardian is there. Her name is Selena Moore. Just have the information desk look her up and notify her.”

With that, she walked to the side of the road and hailed a cab, leaving.

Oliver hadn't expected Isabel to just leave him. He scrambled to get out of the vehicle and chase after her.

The doctor held him back, not wanting to be held responsible if anything else happened to the boy.

The nurse was bewildered. “Is that really his mother?”

*

Twenty minutes later.

The ambulance arrived at Dominion Military Hospital.

Selena had already gotten the news and was waiting at the entrance.

She wore a long white dress, standing like a pure, sacred narcissus in the cold December air, unafraid of the chill, her posture graceful and poised.

Seeing Oliver being wheeled out of the ambulance, she rushed forward, her face etched with anxiety. “Oliver!”
