Isabel smirked. “Adrian, is threatening people the only thing you know how to do?”

Adrian shot back, “Isn’t that something I learned from you?”

“…”

Isabel glanced at the photo on his phone.

For now, she agreed to cooperate.

After a short rest following lunch, the stylist arrived.

Isabel chose a light blue, spaghetti-strap gown adorned with fine diamonds that shimmered like captured light as she moved.

The stylist created a delicate side-braid for her hair and applied a light, fresh makeup look.

She had striking features and fair skin to begin with.

Too much makeup would only detract from her natural beauty.

“All finished, Mrs. Blackwell.”

“Thank you.”

Isabel stepped out of the bedroom. Adrian was waiting in the living room.

He turned at the sound and took in her final look.

She didn’t need his critique. He never truly saw her, no matter what she did.

Besides, she hadn’t dressed up to please him.

So, after their eyes met for a brief moment, she looked away and walked toward the door.

Adrian followed, his deep voice murmuring, “You look beautiful.”

Isabel thought he must be possessed. She didn’t respond.

They took the elevator down to the garage, where a discreetly luxurious Maybach was waiting to take them to the reception.

Adrian got out first, then extended a hand to her.

Isabel didn’t hold back. “Men being visual creatures… why are you whispering that to me? Isn’t that common knowledge?”

She smiled sweetly. “Except for Adrian, of course. After all, you’re so very plain, and he still seems to like you.”

Selena didn’t take the bait. “I’m his sister. Of course he likes me.”

Isabel scoffed. “Need I remind you that this morning, in the hotel restaurant, you claimed to be Mrs. Blackwell yourself?”

“I have proof, you know. Would you like to see it?”

Selena gritted her teeth, but her gentle smile remained fixed. “That was just a joke. Isabel, you always take things so seriously.”

“Oh, a joke?” Isabel pressed on, relentless. “Then why don’t we ask the guests here? Especially Mrs. Richard. Let’s ask her if Mr. Richard had a non-blood-related sister, and she was mistaken for his wife, should she just ‘joke’ about it, or should she clarify the situation?”

“Of course she should clarify immediately,” Mrs. Richard said, walking over. “How could anyone make a joke like that? Even a real sister needs to have some sense of propriety. This is a public event, not your living room where anything goes. If Richard had a sister like that, I would have dealt with her long ago. It’s only because Mrs. Blackwell is so kind that she allows some… questionable sister to linger around.”

Selena’s composure finally cracked. Her eyes welled with tears as she cast a pleading look at Adrian, then turned and fled.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have come here.”
