Now, she was overwhelmed with guilt.

She was a mother of three, yet she had let her grandson get so sick he ended up in the hospital.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know…”

“You can’t blame yourself entirely,” Dr. Lawson told Adrian. “It’s common for children to be picky eaters, and with his delicate health, raising him is certainly a challenge. But once he gets past this age, he’ll gradually get stronger.”

“Thank you,” Adrian said.

Dr. Lawson left the room.

Adrian turned to Mrs. Blackwell. “What kind of shock was it?”

Mrs. Blackwell hesitated.

Adrian guessed. “You told him Isabel died, didn’t you?”

Mrs. Blackwell wiped away a tear. “He had to find out sooner or later. Besides, he doesn’t even like Isabel. He’s always wanted Selena to be his mother. I didn’t think it would matter if I told him.”

Adrian’s voice was cold. “Those are two different things. No matter what, she was his biological mother, the one who nursed him for so long.”

Mrs. Blackwell, her own anger simmering, retorted, “If she hadn’t done such a poor job raising him, would Oliver’s health be this bad? I told you back then to let me take care of him, but you insisted on letting her do it.”

Adrian’s brow furrowed. “She’s his mother. It was her responsibility to care for her own child. It’s not like she had anything else to do.”

“Adrian,” Selena interjected. “Mrs. Blackwell is upset too. Let’s not talk about this right now.”

She took Mrs. Blackwell’s hand comfortingly. “This is my fault. If it weren’t for the trouble I caused, you wouldn’t have had to take me abroad, and you wouldn’t have neglected Oliver. Don’t worry, from now on, I’ll take even better care of him.”

“Daddy…”

A weak voice called out. Adrian immediately went to the bedside and took his small hand. “Where does it hurt?”

Oliver pursed his lips. “Mama… she…”

“Oliver, Mama’s right here,” Selena leaned in, taking his other hand, the one with the IV. “Tell Mama what you want to eat, and I’ll have someone make it for you. From now on, Mama will be right here to take care of you personally.”

When he left the country, he had arranged for Martha to stay with Oliver at the family estate.

Because Martha had learned Isabel’s cooking techniques, Oliver hadn’t been throwing up his food for some time.

“Why would she suddenly quit?”

“She heard about Isabel…” Mrs. Blackwell said. “And then she insisted on leaving. I couldn’t stop her.”

Just thinking about it made Mrs. Blackwell angry. “The Blackwell family pays her salary, and she just up and leaves for an outsider, a worthless…”

Remembering the child was present, she cut herself off. “Anyway, she was determined to go. I even offered her more money, but she refused.”

Adrian’s expression darkened again.

Just as he was about to speak, Selena suddenly said, “I’ll go make something for Oliver.”

Adrian said nothing, simply arranging for someone to escort Selena to Halcyon Hills Residence.
