She reluctantly agreed. “I understand, Mr. Blackwell.”

Isabel got ready, planning to take a cab to the lab.
As she stepped out of her building, she saw a rugged Jeep parked by the curb.
It was Dylan’s car.
She opened the passenger door and got in.
“Thanks for making a special trip.”
Dylan glanced at her as he started the engine. “Cut the fake politeness.”
“...”
Isabel pursed her lips and smiled slightly. “Alright, I won't be polite anymore.”
Dylan grunted. “That’s more like it.”
Even though Isabel had decided to return, the memory of how she had left was still vivid.
Everyone had tried to persuade her, to make her stay.
After all, Y-1 had been a success. They had seen a glimmer of hope, and it was a terrible waste to give up at that point.
But she had been stubborn, insisting on getting married.
Even when someone suggested she could balance work and family, she had still chosen to give up her career.
Because she knew that once an experiment started, there was no time to take care of a family.
By the time they reached the lab building, she was so nervous her palms were sweating.
She could barely make her feet move.
Dylan walked a few steps, realized something was wrong, and turned back to see her still standing by the car.
He walked back to her, noticing her pale face, and said sarcastically, “Well, look at you. I didn't know you could be scared.”
Back when Y-1 had hit a bottleneck, she had proposed a bold solution.
Everyone had opposed it, but she had locked herself in the lab alone to test it.
If it failed, the explosion would have killed her.
But she did it anyway.
At the time, Dylan had thought she was terrifyingly brave, and also a complete idiot.
Amanda Parker didn't mince words. “I’m very angry.”
Isabel replied, “...I know.”
Amanda looked at the bandage on Isabel’s right hand, and a flicker of pain crossed her otherwise icy eyes. “I didn’t say anything when you left to chase after love. But seeing you come back covered in wounds makes me furious.”
Isabel looked up at her, speechless for a long moment.
Finally, Amanda extended her right hand. “I said plenty when you got married. Since you’ve returned like this, I won’t say more. Miss Hayes, there won’t be a next time.”
“Okay,” Isabel said, gripping her hand tightly. “Absolutely no next time.”
“Alright,” Dylan, who had been leaning against the elevator door, finally spoke up. “Enough with the sappy stuff. I’ll take Miss Hayes here for a tour to jog her memory. The rest of you, scatter. Get back to work.”
Her old colleagues exchanged knowing winks.
Some of the newer staff, not in on the history, quietly gossiped among themselves.
Isabel, who had broken into a cold sweat from nervousness, felt parched and went to the break room for a glass of water.
Someone needed to talk to Dylan about something, so she went alone.
In the break room, she overheard hushed whispers.
“There seems to be something going on between Mr. Foster and Miss Hayes, don’t you think?”
