But Adrian suddenly stood up and walked toward her.

Just as Isabel was about to call for help, he anticipated her move, clamping a hand over her mouth and pressing her against the wall.

He whispered in her ear, “The body’s reactions never lie.”

Isabel’s pupils constricted. His hand muffled her protests, allowing only frantic, muffled sounds to escape.

Oliver walked over, a look of confusion on his face. “Daddy, what are you and Mommy doing?”

Adrian released her. “Nothing.”

He looked at Isabel. “Since you and Mr. Reed are husband and wife, once he’s out of surgery, give him a deep, passionate kiss. Then, and only then, will I believe you are Isabel Ashford.”

Isabel scoffed. “Why should I have to prove anything to you? Who do you think you are?”

Adrian remained calm. “You wouldn’t want me and the child to come and disturb you every single day, would you?”

Isabel’s lips tightened, and she fell silent.

Julian’s surgery took a long time, likely due to the limited facilities. But going to a hospital wasn’t an option. No matter what, Julian was her dear friend, her brother. Even if Amanda and Evelyn believed his feelings for her were romantic, she couldn’t help but be consumed with worry.

“Mommy!” Edmund ran in from outside and threw his arms around her. “Why didn’t you wake me to come with you?”

Isabel stroked his hair. “Your daddy was in a rush. He saw you were fast asleep and didn’t want to wake you.”

Edmund knew about the small operating room. “How is Daddy?”

“We’re not sure yet.”

When he saw Adrian and Oliver, his expression turned icy. “Don’t you two have a home? Why do you always come here to bother people?”

Adrian noticed that Edmund was different from other children his age. It was a difference Adrian recognized all too well, for he had been the same as a child. No wonder Isabel was fond of him. Her preferences truly never changed.

Edmund immediately went to do as he was told. As he passed Oliver, he stuck his tongue out. “You’re a kid without a mom, always trying to steal someone else’s. How shameless.”

“You!” Oliver lunged, but Adrian caught him.

He didn't scold his son. Instead, his gaze fell on Isabel. “When you bring a child into this world, you have a responsibility to raise them. You are a truly negligent mother.”

Isabel gave him a weary look, too tired to argue. He was the kind of person who never listened to anyone, always trapped in his own twisted logic.

...

Another half hour passed before Julian was finally wheeled out of the operating room.

His skin was naturally fair, but now, with his lips drained of color, he looked almost lifeless. At least he was conscious.

Isabel spoke with the doctor, getting details about his condition and post-operative care.
