“But, he...”
“Just have him sit in my office,” Adrian cut him off. “Call me if any major decisions need to be made. You have an entire executive support team. The company won’t collapse just because you’re not watching it every second.”
What more could Daniel say? He hung up and began making wedding arrangements.
He had assumed the wedding would be for Adrian and Isabel.
It was only when he saw the invitations that he realized it was for Adrian and Selena.
He was utterly bewildered.
Adrian and Isabel’s marriage hadn’t been legally dissolved, so how could he be marrying Selena? Perhaps it didn’t count as bigamy if the wedding took place in another country. In any case, it wasn’t his problem to solve.
...
After Adrian hung up, a middle-aged man approached him.
“Mr. Blackwell, my boss wants to see you.”
Adrian strode after the man toward the main building.
“Adrian,” Alen greeted him. “I’ve heard everything. Since she’s figured it out, the timing is about right. There’s no need to sacrifice yourself and go through with this wedding.”
Adrian’s eyes were deep and inscrutable. “Even a one-second delay could ruin the perfect timing.”
Alan is a man who lives beyond rules. He had done many things that fell outside the bounds of law and morality. His own stepmother had once caused a great deal of trouble, but eventually, she had become quite... compliant with him. By then, however, he had lost interest. If Isabel weren’t married to Adrian, he might have been tempted to get to know her himself.
He did believe in Adrian. This was a brother he could trust, a friend for life.
“Alright, have it your way. Let’s go see him.”
Before Mrs. Blackwell could say more, her husband entered the room. “Mom, Adrian is planning to marry Selena abroad.”
“Really?” Mrs. Blackwell’s face lit up. “That boy, why didn’t he tell me? I need to prepare.”
“Mom,” Mr. Blackwell said to his own mother, “I checked with the City Civil Affairs Bureau. He and Isabel are still legally married. And his continued association with the Grey Zone is not good for Alexander and Catherine’s reputation. Perhaps... you could give him a call?”
Old Mrs. Blackwell waved her hand dismissively. “I’m too old for this. I can’t handle the stress. What if it gives me a heart attack? He’s your son, you deal with him.”
But Mr. Blackwell had no control over Adrian either. The old matriarch was the only one Adrian would listen to. Why else would he have agreed to marry Isabel in the first place?
“Mom, please just make one call. At the very least, have Isabel’s death certificate processed to dissolve the marriage. It would make my life much easier with the higher-ups. You don’t want to see the Blackwell family get into trouble, do you?”
“My mommy isn’t dead!” Oliver suddenly charged forward, ramming his head into Mr. Blackwell’s stomach.
