Adrian was in the middle of a video conference.
When the bodyguard informed him of the situation, he paused the meeting and went to Selena’s room.
“You wanted to see me?”
Selena looked at his face, so familiar yet so strange.
Even now, she couldn’t believe that this man, who had called himself her brother since childhood, who had protected her so fiercely, had been lying all along.
During those years abroad, he had been so attentive.
Though he didn't do things himself, he hired the best professionals for her.
He had even helped her get into her doctoral program.
Everything he did felt like love.
But why, in the end, was it all a lie?
It was a love she had imagined, but he was heartless.
“Adrian, no matter how powerful you are, you can’t disregard all laws and decency. Just because we’re in the Grey Zone doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.”
“You have no right to decide the fate of another person’s life!”
Faced with Selena’s hysteria, Adrian remained as cold as a machine. “Is that all you wanted to say?”
“Aaargh!” Selena tore at her own hair. His indifference was more maddening than any anger. “Adrian, you will pay for this!”
Adrian’s voice was deep and cold. “If that’s all you’re going to say every time, I suggest you save your energy.”
Selena rushed forward and grabbed his hand, still unable to accept the truth. “Adrian, you wouldn’t be so cruel to me, would you? You promised my grandfather you would take good care of me. If something happens to me while I’m under your care, you won’t be able to face him.”
“And all that time abroad, we were so happy. You even made me a Christmas tree yourself. One year, when there was no snow, you spent a fortune to make it snow artificially. And the villa you bought for me... you said if I didn’t want to go back home, you would stay there with me, that I could see snow every year if I wanted. And...”
Adrian pulled his hand away, cutting her off. “Those were just words. If you wanted to hear them to achieve my goals, I was happy to say them.”
Alen asked curiously, “You’ve been placating her for so long. Why stop now? There isn’t much time left, and you’ve already kept it up for years.”
Adrian sank into his chair, leaning back with a sigh.
He finished up his conference call before answering Alen. “She figured out something was wrong on her own. There’s no point in pretending anymore. It’s not like she can do anything about it.”
“If she was smart enough to figure it out,” Alen said, “then she’s not a fool. You shouldn’t push someone that unpredictable too far.”
Adrian was unconcerned.
Everything he had ever set out to do in his life, he had accomplished.
It might have seemed like Isabel forced him into marriage, but in reality, he had been in control the entire time.
Isabel couldn't escape his grasp, and neither could Selena.
“Did you come here this late just to gossip?”
