“I don’t have any of the final, ingestible version of X-1 on me. I’ll need to start preparing it tomorrow. For tonight, I’ll have to rely on you, Dr. Lawson.”

Isabel’s injured right hand was starting to ache from the strain of holding Oliver, but she couldn’t put him down.

“I’ll take him.” Adrian came over to take Oliver from her.

But Oliver held on tight, wrinkling the white shirt she wore underneath and pulling the collar open, revealing her collarbone and fair skin.

Something flashed in Adrian’s dark eyes. He shifted to block the view and sat down beside her, no longer trying to take Oliver but instead supporting the boy’s weight to ease the strain on her right hand.

Dr. Lawson then said, “He can’t take any more medication at this point, but the rate of decay is slow. If he can get X-1 tomorrow, he should be able to recover with careful nursing.”

He could tell there were issues among the family of three, but he still added, “Given the child’s condition and how much he relies on you, perhaps you should wait until he’s better to sort things out.”

Isabel wasn't one to air her private matters. She just nodded and thanked him.

Dr. Lawson helped his father toward the exit. At the door, he turned to Adrian. “Mr. Blackwell, my father is old. He’s in good health, but it’s not good for him to be disturbed late at night. Since Mrs. Blackwell is such a brilliant pharmaceutical researcher, I hope you won’t be calling my father in on short notice in the future.”

Adrian grunted in acknowledgment.

Dr. Lawson had been the one to operate on Isabel.

At the time, Dylan hadn’t revealed much, only that Isabel’s right hand was very important, and he had hinted at the Y-1 project.

He never imagined his idol was right in front of him.

Thankfully, he was a skilled surgeon and hadn’t given up on treating Isabel despite Adrian’s pressure.

If that hand had been ruined, a wonderful drug like X-1 would never have come to be.
