“Has Adrian been back?” Isabel asked Julian upon entering the room.
Julian shook his head. “Probably waiting for you to soften up.”
Isabel did feel a little soft when it came to Oliver; she couldn't just coldly watch him die. But Adrian…
Isabel shook her head, clearing away the useless thoughts. “Let’s eat.”
Julian asked, “What if he really waits it out, is more ruthless than you, and this divorce doesn’t happen today? What then?”
Isabel hadn’t considered that. “We’ll see when we get to the last minute,” she said.
After lunch, they all stayed in Julian’s room. Isabel was on the phone with old Mr. Foster. Evelyn, Miles, and the others were playing cards with Edmund nearby.
Edmund asked Evelyn, “Auntie Evelyn, did you and Mommy just go to make the X-1, or did you do something else?”
Evelyn was struck by his sharpness. “What else? If we’d done anything else, we wouldn’t have been back so quickly. You’ve done experiments with your mom before; even helping someone else would have kept us past noon.”
Edmund didn’t ask again, but a sense of unease lingered in his heart.
By the window, Isabel listened to old Mr. Foster and replied, “I’ll probably have to go back to Aurelia City. The lab there needs to be rebuilt, so I might stay at the Durantin family estate for a while. As for Westbridge… I can’t be sure if I can stay here long-term right now.”
Her hesitation was, of course, because of Adrian and Oliver.
Old Mr. Foster said, “That’s fine. The medicine you develop will be sent to the country anyway. I was just thinking that if you were at the lab in Westbridge, you could guide the other researchers and save yourself some effort. You can’t possibly produce so much on your own. And you’ll surely want to research other things later.”
Isabel thought for a moment.
“It’s not set in stone. After the divorce, Julian and I might get married. Maybe then I can come back to Westbridge and stay for good.”
Old Mr. Foster wasn’t so optimistic. Otherwise, why would he have agreed to Isabel and Julian’s marriage in the first place?
“Let’s just take it one step at a time. Sometimes, even the best-laid plans go awry.”
“Right,” Isabel said. “When is Dylan getting out?”
