Isabel said nothing. She had said everything she needed to say. It didn’t matter if she waited to see how Oliver was doing. It wouldn’t take long. She hoped Julian would remember what he’d said when she left and not come looking for her, risking reopening his wound.

Seeing her sit quietly in the corner of the sofa, Adrian felt no particular satisfaction. His phone vibrated, and he stood up to take the call outside.

“Adrian,” came Alen’s ambiguous tone. “Only three days left. Where, may I ask, is Selena?”

Alen couldn't return to Westbridge with Adrian. When Adrian left the Grey Zone, he had only promised to bring Selena over. But Alen had waited a long time, hearing all sorts of news, but nothing from Adrian himself.

“If you need any help, just say the word.”

Adrian simply replied, “I’ll handle it.”

Alen chuckled. “Adrian, I may be in the Grey Zone, but I’m not so isolated that I hear nothing. Selena is in the hands of Julian’s birth mother. It won’t be easy for you to bring her back, will it?”

He paused, but the other end of the line remained silent. Adrian was often silent. Alen didn’t doubt his abilities, but communicating with him was exhausting. It had taken him a long time to learn to guess even a fraction of what was on his mind.

“Not so capable after all, are you? Well, it makes sense. The woman was head over heels for you, and you hurt her, pushed her away. I won’t comment on what you did to her in the Grey Zone. But Adrian, I’ll say it again: Selena must return to the Grey Zone. Whether or not you get to have a wife cannot affect this.”
