Isabel looked at Dylan.
Dylan crossed his arms. “I haven’t told him yet.”
“Someone came to me with a fragment of that formula,” Old Mr. Foster said, draining his teacup. “I don’t understand those equations, but I’ve seen your notes. I recognize your handwriting.”
Isabel refilled his cup and, at his gesture, sat down. “That fragment is practically useless. I can write something much better.”
Old Mr. Foster replied, “But with that fragment, she has enough to get into your lab.”
“I know,” Isabel said. “I told Dylan it was fine, but he kept stalling.”
“Which is why she came to me.” Old Mr. Foster knew Isabel’s capabilities and wasn’t worried, but... “Adrian also got involved. I have to do him a favor.”
Isabel had suspected as much.
Adrian would never let Selena suffer the slightest inconvenience.
Still feeling guilty toward Old Mr. Foster, she didn’t want to make things difficult for him. “It’s alright, you can just agree to it. It’s no problem.”
Old Mr. Foster changed the subject, asking about her hand and her future research plans.
Isabel answered each question dutifully.
Midway through the meal, she excused herself to use the restroom.
On her way back, she passed a private room.
A waiter was coming out with a tray, and as she stepped aside to let him pass, she heard Selena’s voice.
“Mom, how have you been these past few years?”
Mom?
She laughed mockingly. “Men only cherish what they can’t have. They couldn’t care less about women who throw themselves at them. Besides, a man in Adrian’s position despises being threatened more than anything. As long as I maintain the ‘sister’ facade, I can stay by his side, and his heart will always be mine.”
“He spent all those years I was abroad coming to see me, didn’t he?”
“You always were the clever one,” Helen praised. “If you hadn’t pretended to be my niece back then, it would have been much harder for me to win Stephen Hayes’s heart with a daughter in tow.”
Selena lifted her chin smugly. “Men are all the same. No matter how rich or powerful, you just have to find their weak spot, and they’re putty in your hands.”
Helen asked with some concern, “Is that Dylan fellow difficult to handle?”
“I don’t need to handle him,” Selena said with a knowing smile. “I just need to handle his grandfather.”
“I’m dining here tonight because I knew Old Mr. Foster would be here with Dylan. He’s already agreed to let me into the lab.”
Helen relaxed. “You really do have a way with things. I won’t worry then. Come home when you have time; I’ll cook for you. And your brother is in college now. That little witch’s mother has been dead for years, so we don’t have to play aunt and niece anymore. She can’t cause any trouble now that I have Stephen wrapped around my finger.”
