Isabel asked Julian to look into her family history.
Then, she composed herself and said to Mr. and Mrs. Ashford, “There’s nowhere to get a test done during the holiday. Don’t worry. As soon as it’s over, I promise I’ll go with you.”
Mr. and Mrs. Ashford were finally reassured.
Since she was the host, Isabel put on a smile. “Let’s continue! We have a table full of delicious food, good wine, and my secret-recipe dumplings. It would be a shame to waste it.”
“Besides, it’s snowing outside! That’s a good omen. Come on, let’s keep eating and drinking.”
Everyone, of course, went along with it.
After a warm meal inside, the snow outside began to fall more heavily.
They went out, drinking and playing in the snow.
Oliver wanted to build a snowman with Isabel, but then he remembered her injured right hand. “Mom, I’ll build you a snowman. You just watch, and keep your hand in your pocket. It’s cold, don’t let it get frostbitten.”
Edmund piped up, “So now you know how to care about Mommy? Before, you were asking her to make good luck charms.”
Oliver had forgotten about that.
He had been worried about Selena at the time and knew his mother was good at making those charms.
His father had told him the doctors had operated on her and that there was nothing serious, which is why he had asked.
Thinking back, he realized his mother must have been hurt even then. Later, he had still been thoughtless, calling Selena “Mom” and completely breaking his mother’s heart.
“I’m sorry, Mom. I know it’s late, but I still have to apologize. You don’t have to forgive me. Just let me live with the guilt. It’s not nearly enough to make up for what I did.”
“Go and play,” was all Isabel said.
Since it was a holiday, some things were better left unsaid.
“Here.” Julian handed her a sparkler.
Isabel realized that Evelyn and the others were already playing with them.
“You came all this way and even brought sparklers.”
“Ms. Caldwell always manages to find some,” Julian said. “If you want to set off real fireworks, I can take you later.”
