Old Mr. Reed didn't press the matter. Aside from a single glance at Adrian when he first came out, he paid him no further attention.
He didn't even greet him.
Seeing that the soup was ready, he ladled a bowl and went back into the cabin.
"Drink this."
Selena followed him inside, acting perfectly at ease. When she heard old Mr. Reed speaking to someone, she was about to politely excuse herself.
But then she heard a familiar voice.
"Is this really safe to drink?"
"Isabel?" Selena stepped back inside, her eyes falling on Isabel's beautiful face. She was utterly surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Old Mr. Reed was a renowned herbalist, true.
But he hadn't practiced in years.
Unless it was for a massage or a very serious illness.
Isabel didn't look gravely ill, and she shouldn't have had any opportunity to meet old Mr. Reed.
Selena herself had introduced Adrian to her.
And during the time they were friends, Isabel's family life was a chaotic mess.
A sickly mother.
If she had known old Mr. Reed back then, why wouldn't she have brought him to see her mother?
What Selena didn't know was that old Mr. Reed had, in fact, treated Isabel's mother.
They had tried both Western and traditional medicine at the time.
But in the end, her mother was overwhelmed by grief. The pain of her husband's affair and his illegitimate child, the knowledge that he didn't love her, combined with the cancer, made her recovery impossible.
"Where I am is none of your business."
Selena was the one who wanted to destroy her hand, so of course, she couldn't reveal her reason for being here.
Isabel took a deep breath and downed the bowl of soup in one go.
Just as the complex flavors were exploding in her mouth, a preserved plum was placed on her tongue.
The relief was instantaneous.
But before she could speak, old Mr. Reed stared at Adrian and asked, "You wouldn't happen to be the one who led this girl into the tomb of marriage, would you?"
Adrian's cold gaze swept over Isabel. "I have no relationship with her."
Old Mr. Reed nodded. "Good."
Isabel: "..."
She opened her mouth to speak, but was cut off again by Selena. "Isabel, it was one thing to use Dylan to make Adrian jealous when you were angry with him, but now you're taking things too far. Old Mr. Reed has a lifetime of impeccable reputation. He is not a tool for you to manipulate."
In Selena's eyes, old Mr. Reed was a grandfather figure she had always respected. So, she naturally assumed that such a person of high moral standing would never entertain such sordid intentions.
Therefore, it had to be Isabel who had a black heart, deliberately using him.
Even if she made their relationship sound dirty, it was Isabel's fault. Old Mr. Reed was surely blameless.
Isabel couldn't take it anymore. "Are you out of your mind? I seriously doubt how you even got your doctorate. Is it so impossible that I might just know old Mr. Reed?"
She scoffed. "It's true what they say: a dirty mind sees dirt everywhere. I suppose it takes one to know one."
"She's just concerned about you," Adrian suddenly interjected. "It's late. You're here alone with a man you're not related to. Isn't that suspicious?"
Old Mr. Reed gave Isabel a look full of meaning.
