Adrian had someone pack up the table, then said to her gently, "I'll find someone else for you. Don't worry."
Selena smiled knowingly. "Adrian, you're so good to me."
Adrian's group left.
The car couldn't drive all the way in, so it was parked on the main road outside.
It wasn't far from Westbridge, so they had driven.
Once they were in the car, Selena saw he was still holding the flatbread and offered, "Adrian, let me throw that away for you."
Adrian stopped her. "I've never had this before. It's not bad."
With that, he started eating it.
He took large bites, yet it didn't look crude.
He had an innate nobility and elegance.
Paired with his handsome face, it was quite captivating.
Although Selena didn't want to marry him, having a man like this wrapped around her finger filled her with a pride that was hard to contain.
As she watched him, she leaned in closer. "I've never had it either. Is it really that good? Let me have a taste?"
Adrian moved away, quickly finishing it and taking a bottle of water to drink.
After swallowing, he said, "It's too dry. Not good."
Then, he had someone bring her a more refined meal.
"You eat this."
Selena was basking in happiness and didn't give the flatbread a second thought.
She hadn't really wanted to eat it anyway.
She was just using it as an excuse to get closer, thinking it would lead to a kiss.
It was important to give him a little encouragement now and then.
You couldn't just keep him on the line without any reward.
But it didn't matter.
There would be other opportunities.
"She came to invite old Mr. Reed, you shot her down, so she went and found a few other experts. I'm not needed anymore."
It was confidential, so Isabel didn't ask for details.
Dylan glanced at her right hand. It still had many scars, but watching her break firewood, it seemed to be functioning fine.
"How's the recovery? If you don't go back soon, you might fall behind schedule. If you're slower than her, she'll definitely accuse you of plagiarism, and it'll be impossible to explain."
Isabel, however, was calm. "I have proof on my computer, remember?"
Dylan was more worried than she was. "That proof might not hold up. You need to develop something similar but distinct."
Isabel said, "There's nothing I can do. My right hand is shot."
Dylan replied, "That's why I'm back to help you."
"Heh." Isabel snapped a piece of wood in two. "You've already collaborated with Selena. If you come back to do research with me now, that plagiarism accusation will be stuck to me for good."
Dylan nodded. "You have a point." He took a small bundle of sticks, broke them, and handed them to her. "Then I'll just stay here and keep you company during your treatment. It'll be a good chance to purify my soul, too."
"There's no room here," old Mr. Reed said, returning with some freshly picked vegetables, having heard the last part. "And having you here won't make her heal any faster. Don't come here mooching off my food."
Dylan chuckled. "Your favoritism is pretty obvious, old Mr. Reed. Unfortunately, my grandparents are still deeply in love, a real pair of lovebirds. So I can't use my grandmother to get a free meal out of you."
