He sat slouched on the plush sofa, his eyes glazed over and completely out of focus.

Realizing the glass had been ripped from his grasp, he looked up and met his grandmother's deeply disappointed glare.

"Grandma... why are you trying to stop me too?"

Furious, the older woman grabbed him by the ear, trying to haul him toward the door.

"Mira is asleep in this room, and you dare drink in here?" She slapped him sharply upside the head. "I'm going to knock some sense into you tonight!"

Cassian's heavy body swayed, but her words managed to cut through the alcoholic haze.

Right... Mira was sleeping in here.

He stiffened his neck and set the bottle down.

The matriarch's expression softened fractionally.

"Just let Ruby go."

She said it out of nowhere.

Cassian, who had just managed to calm down, jolted up, staring at her in absolute disbelief. "What? Grandma, didn't you say you loved Mira? Didn't you want us to reconcile?"

She looked at him, a trace of reprimand in her eyes. "Aren't you the one who did all those horrible things? She refuses to forgive you."

"I can't blindly excuse all the terrible things you've done just because I'm your grandmother. Since her mind is made up, you need to drop it." She sighed, her gaze drifting toward the crib in the corner, her expression turning wistful. "Ruby endured so much suffering, yet she still raised Mira to be such a wonderful little girl. You owe her more than you can ever repay."

The matriarch tapped her finger hard against Cassian's chest.

Back then, that old woman had shown up at their door, praising her granddaughter to the high heavens. Knowing Cassian had never shown interest in women, and out of respect for their shared history, the matriarch had agreed to the marriage. She never anticipated the endless nightmare that would follow.

The older woman shook her head. "It's too late for that. But I'm old, and I can't run your life for you. If you're dead set on ramming your head into a brick wall, then go ahead and bleed."

She waved him off. "Find another room to sleep in. Make sure it's far away. The last thing I need is you throwing a drunken tantrum and waking Mira."
