Natalie sat there, completely dazed.
The elder lady looked at her with concern. “Natalie, did my words frighten you?”
Natalie snapped back to reality and shook her head. She forced a smile. “No, Grandma. I’ve been through things more shocking than this. This won’t scare me. What Nathan did was pretty shocking, too.”
“That's good. I'm telling you this just so you understand. To gain control of the entire Griffith family, Sebastian has indeed done some very hurtful things. But if he hadn't, it would have been me and your grandfather who would be dead. And his mother, and you! And his uncles! He even had to pretend to be distant from his own uncles and aunts to keep them safe.”
“You're a kind girl. It pains me that you’ve been dragged into this vortex.”
Natalie knew her grandmother genuinely cared for her. Otherwise, she wouldn't have come to visit her.
“Grandma, why don’t you tell Sebastian?”
The elder lady sighed. “It’s not time yet. We still don’t know how many illegitimate children Timothy has out there. Not long ago, one of them made a move on one of Sebastian's subsidiary companies. Sebastian went to handle it. Both sides suffered heavy losses, and he was injured himself.”
Natalie remembered the wound on Sebastian's arm. It must have been from that incident.
She hadn't paid him any attention after that. She knew the wound probably still ached from time to time.
“Natalie, Joanna is not simple. I know that. I also know that you’ve suffered a lot, and so has your mother-in-law. But your mother-in-law has had it the hardest. She sacrificed her entire life. It breaks my heart. But even after all she did, she only managed to save her family. Timothy still took everything away with his schemes.”
Natalie thought of her mother-in-law, who always seemed to carry a veil of sadness, and her heart ached.
She had only seen her a few times, and each time, the woman's eyes were filled with sorrow.
She clearly loved Sebastian so much but could only watch him from a distance.
Natalie felt a sharp pang in her chest. She hadn't known any of this, not even in her past life.
She had been so detached back then. During her time with Sebastian, she felt like she was already dead inside. She ignored so much, not wanting to see or hear anything. She always stood far away or sat watching the scenery from a distance.
Now, she regretted it. If she had stayed closer to Sebastian back then, maybe she would know more now.
