Her voice was calm and controlled. Dominic’s eyes narrowed slightly as he turned back to look at her. She was watching him with bright eyes, even managing a small, cheerful smile.

He stared at her for a few seconds, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. “Does the thought of me letting you handle this on your own make you that happy?”

The smile on Cynthia’s face faltered. “Your willingness to let me take the lead shows your trust in me, Mr. Holloway,” she said, choosing her words carefully. “Shouldn’t I be happy about that?”

Even though she didn't feel an ounce of his trust, she knew it was wise to say something pleasant. However, her words had the opposite effect. Instead of satisfaction, a cold sneer appeared on his face as he brushed past her.

As he passed, his voice was a low growl. “Are you really planning on finding a way to let him off the hook?”

Cynthia met his gaze calmly but said nothing. He didn't trust her, and nothing she said would change his mind. It was better to prove him wrong with actions, to present him with results that would speak for themselves.

Her silence, however, was interpreted as guilt.

Dominic stopped, his eyes flashing with contempt. His breath hitched with frustration. “Your devotion is so pathetic, you put sycophants to shame. They’d hail you as their new role model.”

He tore his gaze away from her and left without another glance.

As his retreating back disappeared from view, Cynthia’s mouth moved faster than her brain. “You must have nothing better to do than meddle in everyone’s business!” she shot back.
