Shane gazed out at the surrounding greenery, a mix of verdant leaves and golden hues. It was nearly winter, yet the scenery was still magnificent.

"Why wouldn't I come see you?" She pulled her gaze back and scoffed. "You were my father for decades, after all. If not by birth, then at least by upbringing."

"You talk to me about upbringing? Is this how you repay me?"

Mr. Rayburn's eyes grew sharp.

She ignored it, stuffing her hands in her pockets and walking to the side. "Oh, I did repay you. By stirring up so much trouble, I taught your children the importance of sticking together. Otherwise, you'd have a headache watching the Rayburn family fight amongst themselves even before you're gone."

"Then I suppose I should thank you," Mr. Rayburn snorted, his expression then turning serious. "The real reason for the infighting, the discord between siblings, originated with Quincy and Kate, and Hulda. That's what you're trying to say, isn't it?"

Shane didn't answer.

"I may be old, but I'm not a fool about some things," Mr. Rayburn said, his fingers drumming on his cane. His tone was slow and deliberate. "I knew Quincy and Kate were cozying up to Hulda with their own motives. My two children wouldn't amount to much, so I didn't care. As for Hulda, I knew everything about her. Besides me, she had no real backing. A woman like that is easy to control; all it takes is money to satisfy her. She was with me for years and never had such ideas. So when did she start?"

Mr. Rayburn turned to stare at her, his meaning clear. "Someone must have been whispering in her ear, instilling a greed in her that she shouldn't have had."

Shane sneered. "She was always greedy. Did she really need someone to egg her on?"

"She was, but she didn't dare," Mr. Rayburn said, his face unchanged. "Otherwise, she would have made her move shortly after marrying into the family. Since you aren't her biological child, why would she need to use you in her schemes? If I were her, a child that isn't my own is a disaster waiting to happen."

"You don't know anything!" she snapped. "She used my identity as the young master to secure her wealth and status in the Rayburn family! As long as I was there, she had a place!"

"And did you not use her in return? Dare you say you had nothing to do with her and Quincy's affair?"

Mr. Rayburn slammed his cane on the ground.

"You have no other options."

"What a joke!" Shane suddenly yelled, slamming her hands on the stone table. The bodyguards in the distance tensed, as if she were about to make a move that would cost her her life.

"Don't you forget, old man, your grandson is still in my hands! Do you really think I wouldn't dare kill him?"

"Then do it," Mr. Rayburn said without a hint of hesitation.

Shane gritted her teeth and smiled. "It's because you've planted your own people among my men, isn't it?"

Chapter 625 3

Shane tilted her head, a mocking expression on her face as she deliberately drew out her words. "I installed a little something in that house. Nothing special, just… just a few explosive devices."
