The rain was coming down in sheets now, thunder rolling overhead loud enough to make the windows shake.

Dan had finally been called back, after being given the cold shoulder by Yvonne. Now, faced with Derek, his mood was no better. His voice was icy. “At a time like this, are you sure you don’t need a minute to cool off?”

Derek let out a bitter laugh. “Isn’t this exactly what you’ve been waiting for? Push me to the edge, inherit everything, and the whole Murray family’s yours.”

“If that’s what you’re after, you can just hand the whole thing over to Finch right now,” Dan shot back.

Derek bristled. He was already furious, and now Dan’s words had poured fuel on the fire. Why did he bother calling him back at all—just to get pushed further? But what choice did he have? This was his flesh and blood.

He took a deep breath and forced himself to swallow his frustration. “Hull’s still going after Black Gate,” he said. “What do you think we should do?”

Hull and Susanna. Those two… absolutely the last people who should ever be mixed up together. From his previous couple of meetings with Susanna, Derek had sensed something wasn’t right. Susanna was so head-over-heels for Hull—so completely infatuated—that she acted like she’d forgotten she was even a Murray.

That thought made Derek’s blood boil. “Don’t even think of using Susanna as a go-between,” he snapped. “That girl always takes somebody else’s side.”

He remembered all too well how she’d turned on him for Hull, and it made his anger simmer. Any guilt he felt about her faded a little more with every run-in.

Dan gave a chilly little smirk. “Hull’s your beef, not hers. Don’t you dare drag Lacey’s daughter into it.”

“And what’s this about her ‘taking outsiders’ sides’?” Dan went on, mocking. “Did you ever have her on your side to begin with?”
