“People like that have eyes and ears everywhere, all over the world. My advice? Don’t get involved. Just behave yourself, okay?”
“It’s only a phone call to Skye!” Stella protested.
Yvonne fell silent at the mention of Skye. God, Skye. Just saying her name made Yvonne scowl. Skye had pilfered so much of her stuff and never bothered to give any of it back.
But still—it was just a call. That was nothing. If anyone asked, she’d simply say, “Skye’s handling it.” If trouble came of it, then Skye could wade into the mess herself.
Wait. “You said Finley told you Skye’s in Yoreland? Told her to look after Tegan?”
“Yeah, that’s what he said.”
“Then why isn’t he calling her himself?”
“He didn’t say!” Stella sounded exasperated, maybe even a little nervous.
Finley told her where Skye was, suggested Stella call—but wouldn’t do it himself. He was her brother! Surely, it would have been easier for him.
Yvonne, who just moments ago had been utterly unwilling to budge, suddenly softened. “Fine. I’ll call her right now.”
Stella stared at her phone, dumbfounded. She’d had a whole argument ready to go, and all that useless prep faded in a heartbeat.
“Wait, seriously?”
“Since when do I lie to you?” Yvonne said smoothly, almost playfully. “Be good and wait for my good news.”
With that, she hung up.
On her end, Yvonne was grinning with the sly mischief of a fox. Xander, just coming out in freshly changed clothes, caught sight of her sitting cross-legged with a wicked grin, phone already at her ear as she dialed Skye.
No sooner had the call connected than Yvonne asked, “Skye, tell me: would you like a sister-in-law?”
