Chapter 763: A Bond Like Theirs

Nothing made sense anymore.

The world fractured into noise and motion and fear all at once, as if reality itself had lost its footing.

The darkness pouring from Violet swelled outward like a living tide, hungry and unstoppable.

Fae screamed. Guards were already retreating, instincts screaming at them to run, but there was nowhere fast enough to escape.

"Leave now!" Lila yelled at the queen but she wouldn’t.

"I need to get to my daughter!" Queen Seraphira yelled.

Then Annequin stepped into the chaos, raising her hand as shadows answered her call. They poured out from inside of her where they have been living in all this while. They spiraled outward in perfect symmetry, meeting Violet’s unmaking head-on.

The collision was immediate as darkness slammed into darkness with the force of colliding worlds.

For a heartbeat, the two powers locked with Violet’s raw, devastating void pressing outward in chaotic waves, and Annequin’s shadows folding around it, compressing, restraining, and canceling it. The air screamed as pressure built between them, light bending violently, and sound collapsing into a high, piercing whine.

Then—BOOM.

The impact detonated like a sonic blast.

A shockwave ripped across the grounds, flattening grass, and shattering stone markers like glass. Fae were thrown through the air like broken dolls—guards, attendants, nobles alike and unfortunately, Queen Seraphira—slamming into the ground, skidding, rolling, and groaning in pain.

The cardinal alphas were no exception.

Asher was flung backward hard enough to knock the breath from his lungs. Griffin crashed into a fallen pillar, pain exploding through his shoulder. Alaric barely managed to twist midair before hitting the ground, skidding through the earth. Roman landed on one knee, claws digging deep as he fought to stay upright.

At the center of it all, Violet and Annequin were hurled apart.

Violet’s body lifted from the ground as if struck by an invisible fist, the darkness tearing free from her in violent recoil. She hit the earth hard, rolling once, twice, before coming to a stop in the churned soil, gasping, her vision swimming.

Annequin fared little better. Her own shadows collapsed inward as she staggered back several steps, her boots carving lines through the ground before she dropped to one knee, one hand braced against the earth. For the first time, shock flashed through her expression.

Violet was insanely powerful.

And where in the world had she sent her soldiers?

Silence followed for a long time.

Dust hung thick in the air, drifting slowly as the last remnants of darkness dissipated, fading into nothingness.

Around them, the Fae struggled to their feet, staring at the devastation with shocked expression. For once fear struck them at what their princess was capable of.

Queen Seraphira pushed herself upright, the world still spinning, only for Lila to rush to her side and steady her before she could stumble again.

"Your Majesty," Lila said urgently, gripping her arm. "Easy."

Seraphira barely heard her. Her eyes were already scanning the ruined grounds, heart pounding.

"Violet," she said hoarsely. "Where is my daughter?"

Lila turned and pointed to the scorched ground where the cardinal alphas knelt in a tight circle around her daughter.

Seraphira wrenched herself free and moved toward them, her skirt dragging through ash and crushed grass. She dropped to her knees beside Violet just as Asher looked up, his face stripped of its usual control.

"I don’t know what’s happening to her," he said, with genuine fear in his voice. "She won’t stop."

Violet’s body jerked violently against the earth. Her breaths came in shallow, broken gasps, her limbs twitching as raw magic rippled beneath her skin.
