"Roman, watch out!" Violet warned desperately through the bond.
But there was no response.
"Stop already, you idiot!" Alaric shouted out loud as if Roman could somehow hear him from that distance.
"Something’s wrong," Asher muttered, his eyes narrowing immediately.
What none of them realized was that Roman had pushed himself far beyond his limit. Right now, the dragon was no longer flying with control.
He was falling.
"He’s fucking exhausted!" Griffin shouted in alarm just as Roman’s dragon eyes finally slid shut in surrender and his massive body crashed directly into the dome. Electricity exploded across the barrier on contact.
"Roman!" Violet’s heart clenched painfully as the enormous dragon recoiled from the shock before sliding helplessly down the dome and crashing heavily outside the academy walls.
But it was not merely Roman collapsing that terrified her. It was what waited outside.
The zombies.
The entire area surrounding Lunaris Academy had become infested with the creatures. Just last night a team had cleared the horde lingering outside the school grounds and yet somehow, by morning, a fresh swarm had already returned.
"Micah!" Violet called in a loud voice.
The demon prince did not need further explanation. At that moment, both siblings moved perfectly in sync. The scene looked almost cinematic as Violet rushed toward Micah while he simultaneously reached for her. The instant their hands touched, both vanished from sight.
A second later they appeared outside the academy walls.
The dragon was gone and in his place laid a naked and bloodied Roman while nearby Aeron fought off the closest zombie with his fist. About eight more creatures staggered from the treelines lining the road.
Violet did not come to play. Her eyes glowed with fierce protectiveness the moment they landed on Roman. Darkness exploded outward from her body and swallowed the zombies whole.
She did not even bother checking the outcome. Instead, she immediately dropped beside Roman whose eye cracked open.
Thank the goddess.
"Hey," Violet whispered softly, staring down at him. He looked absolutely wrecked.
Roman attempted to respond only for pain to wrench through him. His gaze dropped weakly toward his stomach just in time for two silver bullets to force themselves out from the side of his abdomen.
"Ugh..." Roman grimaced as the bullets hit the ground with dull metallic clinks. "That hurts."
"Shhh," Violet hushed him immediately. "Don’t talk."
She needed to get him to Adele quickly. If those bullets were silver, then the poison was probably still moving through his system already. The fact his body managed to eject them at all was insane enough on its own.
Carefully, Violet helped him onto his feet.
But Roman would always remain Roman.
"You saw that, right?" he asked with a crooked grin despite looking moments away from collapsing again. "I turned into some big-ass dragon. Nobody can top that."
Violet sighed tiredly.
"Nobody can top nearly dying the way you just did either, Roman Draven."
She adjusted his arm securely over her shoulder so he could lean his full weight against her.
"Micah, let’s g—" Violet abruptly cut herself off.
Both Micah and Aeron were staring downward at something nearby with expressions she could only describe as deeply disturbed.
It must have been the zombies. Had she accidentally overdone her power again? Unease stirred in Violet’s stomach as she slowly approached the bodies.
Then her jaw dropped open.
"Impossible..." she breathed, shock flooding her face.
Roman immediately understood before laughing weakly.
Adele’s brows nearly disappeared into her hairline. She shot her mate a look that practically screamed are you fucking serious right now?
