Wiona stayed silent. Now that her vision had returned, she just stared at Kellen, quietly observing. She watched the calm unraveling, the icy resentment flickering behind Kellen’s eyes, waiting to see what she’d do next.

Kellen didn’t pick up on how unsettlingly calm Wiona was. She only glared, her anger practically vibrating in the air. “Wiona, do you know what’s honestly the saddest thing about you? That perfectly round belly of yours… do you even realize what’s hidden in there?”

“I don’t,” Wiona replied, her voice flat. “If you’ve got something to say, just tell me.”

Kellen tipped her head back and let out a wild, almost broken cackle. Her makeup was a mess, streaked and smudged, and her hair had come loose, sticking out in odd directions. She looked completely unhinged. After laughing, she lunged and grabbed Wiona by the collar. “You bitch. You finally lost to me, didn’t you? If you hadn’t shown up back then, Alona never would have sent me out of the country. If I’d never left, I wouldn’t have seen all those temptations, I wouldn’t have made those stupid mistakes, and I wouldn’t be getting humiliated in public now. This is all your fault!”

Wiona shot her a tired look. “That’s a stretch, don’t you think? Did you really think I wanted that arranged marriage?”

“You didn’t want it? Why not?” Kellen snapped. “Jace is amazing, literally perfect. He’s the man of my dreams. What, you think you’re too good for him?”

Wiona almost laughed at how far gone Kellen sounded. She was so worked up, she’d started spitting, and some landed right on Wiona’s face. It was gross.

Wiona didn’t bother to answer, but Kellen just got louder. “And if you didn’t want it, why didn’t you say no? You went through with it because you’re vain. You’re the reason Jace and I got split up.”

Wiona rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Do you even get what a family alliance is? It’s a marriage for business, not love. If it wasn’t me, it would’ve been someone else, probably from another family. Did you really think you’d be the one chosen? Besides, Jace and I never had any feelings for each other after we got married. Isn’t that exactly what you wanted?”

A small, smug smile crept onto Kellen’s lips. “Yeah, and so what? You married him, you got the Salisbury name. Big deal. His heart was always mine. His body was mine. Wiona, do you know why he never touched you after you got married? It was because of the promise he made to me. I made him swear he’d stay faithful, that he’d only ever have one woman in his life, and he kept his word. So yeah, you got to be his wife, but you also got to live like a widow.”

Kellen stared, disbelief all over her face. “What do you mean?”

Wiona looked her straight in the eye. “Kellen, you really used to be sharp, you know. I heard you fought tooth and nail to get out of your family. You made it into Stonehill College with barely any help. That takes brains. It’s just… such a waste. You could’ve used all that drive to do something better, but you got distracted by all the shiny things, lost your way.”

She took a breath and let the truth fall between them. “What if you’d put all that effort into changing your life for the better? What if you’d focused on growing stronger inside, on actually learning something at college, instead of wasting your time chasing after a guy? If you’d stuck to your path, maybe your life would look completely different now.”

Kellen staggered back. She’d never heard words like that before. Because of Jace, everyone had always just pandered to her, flattered her, told her what she wanted to hear. No one ever tried to wake her up. No one ever cared about her future, not even herself. She knew people didn’t owe her anything, and deep down she realized they’d all just seen her as a pretty decoration, a trophy. She’d gotten so lost trying to change her fate, she’d never even looked back.

But Wiona’s words hit her hard, sharp and undeniable, like a slap that finally brought her to her senses.
