No one else spoke up. The room was heavy with unspoken thoughts, and Wiona could feel it. She didn’t bother with small talk. She just waited in silence until Dr. Lee arrived, then gently settled Derek back into his crib.

Dr. Lee gave Derek a careful checkup. “Mrs. Hawthorne, Derek’s spitting up is because his digestive system isn’t fully developed yet. It’s normal for babies his age,” he explained. “As he grows, it should happen less and less. There’s really nothing to worry about.”

Wiona nodded. “I know spitting up isn’t a big deal for babies. But if Derek is healthy, wouldn’t this usually start earlier than three months?”

Dr. Lee paused for a moment. “You’re right. It’s pretty rare for a baby to only start spitting up in the third month. Usually, if it’s going to be a problem, you notice it right away, even in the first month.”

Ada’s face changed a little when she heard this. She sneaked a look at Cecily, the junior nanny, who just stood there quietly, staring at the floor. Worry crept into Ada’s eyes.

Dr. Lee continued, careful not to miss anything. “But I’ve checked Derek thoroughly. I didn’t find anything else wrong. All signs point to him just developing a little slower, which can happen. It’s unusual, but not impossible.”

Wiona nodded, accepting his answer. “Alright. If Derek’s been spitting up lately, why hasn’t it been written in the daily log?”

She looked around at the staff, her voice sharp. “Why didn’t I know about this? I check those logs every day. I read about every feeding, every diaper change. So why am I only hearing about this now, after it happened to me?”

She took a breath, her tone icy. “Tell me. Why did you leave this out of the logbook?”

It was the first time Wiona had ever truly lost her temper in front of her staff. Suddenly, the whole room went silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Annette arrived with the others, drawn by the commotion. She took in the scene, then looked straight at Ada, her brow pinched in a frown. “Ada, is there something you want to explain?” she asked, her voice low and serious.

Ada stepped forward, her hands shaking, her face pale. “Mrs. Hawthorne, it was our mistake. We really did overlook it. But Derek only started spitting up a few days ago. Every time after he eats, if he’s not held just right, he spits everything up. We’ve all been exhausted, doing our best to take care of him. Maybe that’s why we forgot to write it down. But we would never do anything to hurt him. I swear.”
