That night, Wiona just couldn’t bring herself to trust anyone else with Kane and Derek. She had their cribs moved right into her bedroom, determined to watch over her sons personally. Every little task, every feeding and diaper change, she insisted on doing herself.

Conrad understood how scared she was, so he didn’t argue. Instead, he stayed right by her side, helping out however he could. He changed diapers, prepared bottles, gave the babies their medicine, burped them, soothed them to sleep. Anything Wiona did, he was there too.

Sometime in the middle of the night, Kane started crying. Wiona shot up in bed, but Conrad was already moving. He slipped out from under the covers and started mixing formula with a practiced hand, as if he’d been secretly learning just for this moment. In no time at all, he had two bottles ready.

He put a finger to his lips. “Shh. The boys are asleep, and you really need to rest. You’ve done enough today. I’ve got plenty of energy, don’t worry about me. Just sleep.”

So Wiona lay down, watching as Conrad gently soothed Kane. When Kane was settled and sleeping again, Conrad carefully laid him in his crib and picked up Derek, handling him with extra care.
