Thunder rumbled through the early morning as rain poured down in sheets. By the time Wiona made her way downstairs, the new nannies had already arrived and were lined up in the foyer, looking both eager and a little nervous.

“Good morning, ma’am,” they greeted her in unison.

Phil stood beside them, ready to make introductions. “Ma’am, everyone here is between twenty-five and thirty-five. This is Rosa, she’s thirty-two and has an impeccable track record. She’s known as a diamond-level nanny in the business. Her husband passed away five years ago, and they never had children. Rosa has decided she won’t remarry.”

He moved down the line. “Isla is also diamond-rated. She’s younger, only twenty-five, but has five years of experience. She treats childcare as her life’s purpose. She’s asexual and has no intention of ever marrying.”

He started to introduce the others. As Wiona listened, she realized that every single woman here had no plans to marry or have children of their own.

She couldn’t help but wonder, was this all a coincidence? It was almost too perfect. Finding so many nannies with the same rare outlook... This had to be Conrad’s doing, she thought. Maybe he’d insisted on it, and Phil just followed orders. Once you’ve been burned, you become extra careful. Phil leaned in and whispered, “You guessed right, ma’am.”

Wiona almost laughed. Was Phil reading her mind now just by watching her face?

She cleared her throat. “Can I ask what you each hope to get from this job?”

Phil gave them an encouraging look. “Don’t be shy. She is very kind.”

Off to the side, Molly watched everything with sharp eyes. She thought, Kind, sure... as long as you don’t cross her. If you behave, life here is a dream. But if anyone tries anything sneaky, they’ll regret it for sure.

Molly’s stare was almost intimidating as she checked out the nannies. The new semester at Stonehill College was about to start, so she’d be heading back to school soon. Even so, whenever she had free time, she’d keep an eye on these new hires.

Rosa stepped forward. “Ma’am, we’re here to work and provide the best service for you, your husband, and the two babies. We have no other expectations.”
