They’d looked into my past with your mom, so they asked me to pretend to be your dad. All I had to do was keep you from finding out the truth about who you really are. They said I could name any price if I pulled it off. The Thompsons paid even more than Carter did. Why wouldn’t I take the offer? He clenched his jaw, finally realizing how badly he’d been used. These rich families had treated him like a pawn for their games.
